*though it has provided a rest and peace like none other*
We have discovered what we believe is a WELL hidden gem.
The original U.S. life saving service ...now known as the U.S. Coast Guard.
I will admit...I was drawn to this facility for another reason....it is located in Rodanthe.
Sound familiar?
Perhaps you read the book...or saw the movie "Nights in Rodanthe" by Nicholas Sparks.
I did...a couple of years ago...and read that a woman who works at this historical site...was also in the movie!
I read that they have summer events that include her sharing her experience in making this film...so I grabbed Emma and we went. :0)
Well...although *admittedly* I went for the movie...and the tie to the Island we've been on for nearly 2 weeks, I walked away with SO much more!!!
The history *all along the OBX* is SO incredibly RICH.
I mean, we all know the "typical" draws...*wild horses, Wright bros, Black Beard* but I feel like we stumbled across the BEST kept secret out here.
The couple who work this site...are passionate about the history....preserving and honoring the lives of the men who risked it all for the lives of strangers in peril. I will tell you what...after just standing on the shoreline of this ocean, I can't IMAGINE putting myself in one of those tiny boats to rescue another. These men are definitely heroes!
I took a few photos *but don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it themselves ;0)*
These are from the watch tower:
This is the female half of the "keepers" ;0)...she happens to be the one in the movie. :0)
and this is my stunning daughter who was mistaken for being 18 years old today. :0(
If you find yourselves on the Outer Banks...looking for something off the beaten path...run to Rodanthe and enjoy. :0)
